An especially distinguished group of 19th-century European paintings and sculpture includes outstanding works by the artists responsible for shaping the course of modern artistic expression. It showcases work by Gustave Courbet, Eugène Delacroix, Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Paul Cézanne, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, Pierre Bonnard, Auguste Rodin, Aristide Maillol, and Henri Matisse, among others.

Significant canvases by James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Childe Hassam, and Thomas Eakins and examples of turn-of-the-century art glass, silver, and ceramics by Tiffany and other firms and studios highlight the museum’s representation of late 19th-century American art.
