Directed by Werner Herzog and Dmitry Vasyukov. Germany, 2010, 90 mins. In Russian and English with English subtitles. Hawaiʻi Premiere
Rogue director Werner Herzog takes viewers on yet another epic journey into a remote and extreme natural landscape—this time to the heart of the Siberian Taiga. Deep in the wilderness, far from civilization, on the Yenisei River is the tiny village of Bakhtia, home to 300 people. There are only two ways to reach this outpost: by helicopter or boat. There’s no telephone, running water or medical aid. The locals, whose daily routines have changed little over the centuries, live according to their own values and cultural traditions. With insightful commentary written and narrated by Herzog, Happy People: A Year in the Taiga follows one of the Siberian trappers through four seasons to tell the story of a culture virtually untouched by modernity. Winner: Earth Grand Prix - Special Award, Tokyo International Film Festival. Official Selection - Telluride Film Festival, Vancouver Film Festival
Special guest speaker: Dr. Christina Gerhardt, assistant professor of German at the University of Hawaiʻi–Mānoa, will introduce the film at 7:30pm and lead a post-screening Q+A.
