February 16-18, 2018
To celebrate the Lunar New Year, we look at the work of one of China’s leading Fourth Generation filmmakers. Wu Tianming, who died in 2014, gained fame in his home country for his films and as head of the Xi’an Film Studio, but it was his mentorship of Fifth Generation filmmakers like Zhang Yimou and Chen Kaige that put the spotlight on Chinese cinema globally and earned him the title of “godfather of contemporary Chinese cinema.” Films in the lineup showcase the skills of Wu Tianming as both director and producer. Special guest Janet Wu, the daughter of Wu Tianming, will be in attendance for post-screening discussions
