Honolulu Museum of Art School
Each year, the Honolulu Japanese Chamber of Commerce supports the business of art in Hawai’i by organizing this annual venue for the best works of Hawai‘i‘s artists, held at the Honolulu Museum of Art School.
In 1978, the HJCC held its first exhibition to promote Japanese artists in Hawai‘i. Since then the exhibition has evolved to include works by Hawai‘i artists of all backgrounds. Today hundreds of artists make submissions to Commitment to Excellence.
Invited guest artist: Hiroki Morinoue
With a career spanning more than 40 years, Morinoue works in many media including painting, printing, ceramics, photography, sculpture and mixed media. His art is in numerous public collections including Hawai‘i State Foundation for Culture and the Arts, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Ueno no Mori Museum in Tokyo. His large commissions can be seen at the Honolulu State Library, Honolulu Convention Center, Pahoa High School on the Big Island, Honolulu State Library, and First Hawaiian Banks in Honolulu and Kailua-Kona. Morinoue is one of the founders, and a volunteer artistic director, of the nonprofit Holualoa Foundation for Arts & Culture on Hawai‘i Island. He was designated a Living Treasure of Hawai‘i by the Honpa Hongwan-ji Mission in Honolulu.
HJCC also invites a selected group of Hawai‘i artists to enter one work each. This year will feature work by Sean Lee Loy Browne, Ron Kent, David Kuraoka, Rochelle Lum, John Morita, Marcia Morse, Fred Roster, Hanae Uechi Mills and Doug Young.
