About this Class:

This weekend workshop explores ways of incorporating chance and play into the Risograph printing process. Traditionally used as an efficient method of duplication in an office setting, the Riso has become a unique and inexpensive means of print production for artists and publishers alike, providing a range of color and image processing options. This workshop will break the cycle of design-to-print, exploring alternative methods, and encouraging creative "misuse" of the Riso as an open-ended tool for image building.

Students will experiment with a range of materials and approaches to mark making and image processing, exploring form and texture through improvisation and layering. Additive and subtractive methods will be used to create collage and built composition on the Riso's scanner bed. We will also explore the incorporation of other printmaking techniques and ways they may (or may not) work in conjunction with the Risograph process. No Riso experience necessary!

Workshop Schedule:

Nov 18 • 1–9pm (with a dinner break)

Nov 19 • 10am–4pm  Artist Talk to follow at 4:30pm

Nov 24 • 1–5pm

Nov 25 • 1–5pm

Nov 26 • 10am–4pm

Artist bio

Josh Dannin is an artist living and working in Manchester, NH, where he teaches graphic design at Saint Anselm College. He received his MFA in printmaking from Ohio University in Athens, OH. Primarily working with relief and Risograph print processes, Dannin is interested in the intersection between modern technology, traditional craft, and mass production. Dannin runs Directangle Press, a small print shop and publishing house specializing in short-run books, zines, and editions. He co-edits Power Washer, a semi-annual zine about screen printing that asks soft questions and thinks hard thoughts.
